Aspect Assignment
The work that I chose to focus on was from Volume 11 of Aspect. The artist was Jessica Lagunas and I was pulling ideas from her three short videos, Para verte major, Para besarte major, and Para acariciarte major. These three pieces focused on the tale of “Little Red Riding Hood” and how she perceived the wolf that was disguised as her grandmother. The three titles are literally translated to what better to see you with my dear, what better to kiss you with my dear, and what better to caress you with my dear. Lagunas is commenting on the disguise that woman is meant to wear in order to appear “better” and more beautiful to men. As a generative topic, I would like to focus on the idea of beauty and what it means to be beautiful, and/or what is beauty.
The definition of beauty according to dictionary.com is as follows,
noun, plural -ties.
1.the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).
2.a beautiful person, esp. a woman.
3.a beautiful thing, as a work of art or a building.
4.Often, beauties. something that is beautiful in nature or in some natural or artificial environment.
5.an individually pleasing or beautiful quality; grace; charm: a vivid blue area that is the one real beauty of the painting.
6.Informal. a particular advantage: One of the beauties of this medicine is the freedom from after effects.
7.(usually used ironically) something extraordinary: My sunburn was a real beauty.
8.something excellent of its kind: My old car was a beauty.
The following video, The Evolution of Beauty, shows how easy it is to make a person beautiful, not only with traditional make up, but now with the use of technology as well. The video is from Dove’s campaign for real beauty. More information on the campaign is offered at Campaignforrealbeauty.com.

While doing my research I only focused on the word beauty and I found it interesting what information popped up when I googled the word. The first things that appeared on the menu paired the word beauty with words like hairstyle, makeup, nails, and cosmetics. These words all relate to the idea of beauty being something that anyone can attain by covering up with products; essentially putting on a disguise to appear to be something else. Beauty is not something that someone is lucky to have but something that anyone can attain with money, products, Photoshop, and plastic surgery. This is very similar to the ideas of Lagunas and the disguise of the wolf in “Little Red Riding Hood”.
A further exploration of this generative topic could be what it means to be beautiful in other cultures.

URL and description for my midterm project for New Media!
Overall, my piece represents my inability to create art through new media. I have a very hard time mastering the techniques involved in working with the many programs that are used to create new media. I have always worked best with my hands and have only ever really worked in traditional media. Because the assignment was so open, I thought it would be fun to somehow try and combine new media with traditional media. Because I still have no real skill in new media, I decided that I could at least incorporate one of the most important tools in creating new media, the computer. To touch on some of Brian Knep’s ideas of nature and growth, I immediately thought of the flower as my inspiration. Ultimately my ideas formed into painting a small rose bush on a computer screen and then photographing it in the dirt, to give the idea that the flowers were growing from the ground, but also off of the computer. Ultimately combining traditional and new media.

Update on Brian Knep
After hearing Brian Knep speak, I am all the more intrigued by his work. It was very interesting to hear about how he makes the organic looking forms that are so prominent in the majority of his pieces. I had no idea the extent at which he relies on math and science, as well as technology. It amazes me that the bulk of these organic looking forms were based off of a series of code that make up small particles, which then form the blobs themselves. I found all of that to be very fascinating and innovative. I also enjoyed hearing about his past and what jobs and studies he had partaken in before he took on the path of becoming an artist. This helped me to understand a majority of where his inspiration and skill level had originally formed. It was also neat to get an inside look on what he was getting ready to pursue and make in the future. I enjoyed hearing his explanation for his plans with the nematodes; something that I would have a hard time making into an art form, but then seemed to make perfect sense once he described his visions for them. Overall, it was a very insightful visit. It was an excellent look into what his works really meant to him and the complexities of how they were created. I look forward to seeing what he does next.
Response to the Yesmen
I found the Yesmen to be absolutely hilarious! I agree with the ethics of what they’re doing, but not quite 100%. The only qualm I have about their practical jokes, are when they may cause false hope for those who do not deserve it, like in the situation with Dow and Bhopal. However, I find it an excellent and comical way to expose major corporations to their faults and stupidity. I find it to be very believable that these institutions would fall for the Yesmen’s hijinks. Why wouldn’t they? These men have such convincing tactics to fool them with. I do however; find it amusing that they take the Yesmen so seriously. How could they not even begin to consider that it is all a joke, when they are presenting such ludicrous ideas and speeches with so much sincerity? Nonetheless, I am now hooked, and am looking forward to revisiting their site and maybe even renting one of their movies!
